Scum Fun
Swimming pool installation with active Spirulina and artificial lily pads.
A domestic swimming pool, 260 x 160 x 65 cm, filled with active Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) and fitted with artificial lily pads. The work draws on the visual language of suburban Dutch summer — plastic garden pools and waterways colonised by blue-green algae — transposing it into a gallery context. The Spirulina, alive and growing over the duration of the exhibition, produces the surface scum characteristic of eutrophic water. The artificial lily pads sit on top.
